2020’s Song Of The Year on Racial Injustice : Jimmy Dennis Who Spent Years Innocent On Death Row Releases New Anthem About Racism In America “HATE THE SKIN I’M IN”
Jimmy Dennis spent more than twenty five years on death row, an innocent man.
In those many years, as he struggled to prove his innocence, he also promised himself and his supporters that when his name was finally cleared and he was once again a free man, he would speak out about injustice — and he’s been doing that ever since he got home in 2017, when he was finally released from Pennsylvania’s Death Row.
Life since then hasn’t always been easy — his lawyers set up a Jimmy Dennis freedom fund for those who want to help ease his transition back into the free world after so much time was stolen from him. Since he has been returned to his life and family, he has also returned to the music studio — and the beautiful voice that he could never find the heart to raise in song in the darkness of that cell on Death Row has come back to him…and with the voice of experience- the voice of innocent as he often taglines — that voice is stronger, more powerful, more compelling than ever.
And the world is listening.
Rolling Stone recently covered his previous releases “U Said,” and “Awe You Done Went And Did It" in a long profile article and a short filmed documentary on the case, he was featured on Now This Media and on Wrongful Convictions With Jason Flom, profiled in an inspiring Epoch Times story , interviewed on several radio stations, featured in Los Angeles’ Prosperi Press and is to be the subject of an upcoming Authority Magazine / Buzzfeed article in the Meet The Rising Stars Of The Music Industry series.
And with his latest song, released on August 28th, 2020 — not only the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s iconic I Have A Dream speech, but the date of the 2020 March on Washington AND Jimmy’s 4th birthday as a free man after 25 lonely birthdays locked away innocent on death row, he takes his place beside the industries biggest stars.
The important new song HATE THE SKIN I’M IN (featuring the talented Philadelphia artist Gwen Jackson) was first broadcast to the world as Jimmy sat on a panel in mid August with Ja Rule, Naughty By Nature and other superstars discussing police violence and accountability in America.
The song, industry watchers agree, is absolutely incredible — heartbreaking, inspiring, passionate — real.
And it could not be more timely.
The one song from 2020 you will likely tell future generations about.
Like the Black lives it talks about — this song MATTERS.
