All Women Know Peeing Outside Isn’t Easy. Founder Of Houston Based ZipHers Launched To Make Things More Equal For Female Marathon Runners, Hikers, and Adventurers
“ZipHers is a female owned and operated company based on a core belief,” says Houston based founder, Debbie Mercer, a 70 something entrepreuner who has lived in the city for many years.
“Women shouldn’t feel uncomfortable outdoors when they need to pee. Our goal is to make the process easy so that you can enjoy your adventures and focus on achieving your goals.”
The Problem : For women, peeing outdoors is not easy.
Hiking pants and athletic wear have not served women when it comes to relieving ourselves outside. Typically we have to find a place to hide, and pull our pants completely down, leaving us feeling vulnerable. It deters us from our outdoor adventures, it’s time consuming and can be a little scary for some.
The Inspiration : To level the playing field for female marathon runners, hikers, and outdoor adventurers.
Debbie has long been an outdoor adventurer herself. “I love being outdoors whether it’s running, walking, hiking, camping or any other activity that allows me to be in nature,” she says.
It was those experiences that sparked the idea for ZipHers.
“The idea of Zip Hers was the result of both my years of running marathons and my hiking excursions. For a runner, timing is VERY important,” explains Debbie. “We often train to beat our previous personal best times. One hurdle that can hinder this goal is waiting in line for the outdoor portacan. While men can easily find numerous places to pee, women have to wait in long lines. Tick. Tick. Tick. Every moment feels like torture. This frustration had been on my mind for years, and then the lightbulb went off when I was hiking the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim expedition! A female friend and hiker in the expedition experienced a moment of unintended self exposure as she tried to discreetly “use the restroom.” Her embarrassment and the continual jokes from some of the male hikers, fueled my passion to find solutions for both of these related issues. As women, we shouldn’t have to be sidetracked from our goals and adventures. That is why I began the path of solving this issue.”
