It’s only been a few months since Ashley Kincaid Eve became a household name to those who care about justice in the United States. At just 33 years old, this powerhouse attorney has emerged as a powerful young leader in the abolition / anti death penalty movement. And, considering she grew up in the shadow of the federal death penalty — she clearly remembers being thirteen years old when the world turned its eyes her home state for the execution of Tim McVeigh — it couldn’t be more appropriate that she has evolved into an internationally quoted advocate — and a truly cutting edge leader in the fight against the federal death penalty in the United States.

This once passionate young activist, now attorney with the powerful voice incensed at the injustice in the world, is even more horrified by what she has learned in the trenches about the death penalty. After all — that’s why she went to law school in the first place — specifically to “Change the world,” and she is doing it.

This week, she announced her latest initiative — sure to draw global attention to what Kincaid Eve calls a “human rights crisis — the US federal execution spree” of recent months under President Trump, after a 17 year unofficial moratorium on federal executions. She says the event is partially a tribute to iconic anti death penalty hero Bill Pelke, who died suddenly in November, a great loss to the movement. “Bill always talked about the importance of the young people stepping up and taking the torch in this fight. This event-which will feature and honor Bill Pelke throughout-is me answering that call,” she says with determination..

The movement is lucky to have such a determined torch bearer.

“I’m so excited to share with you what I’ve created!” she said in a social media announcement, speaking of how she had been working with Pelke before his death on the event, which they thought would mark the last of Trump’s federal executions. But, she says, “After that the Trump administration set a flurry of executions in the lame duck period and has made it a priority to revive the firing squad. Realizing that Bill himself is an International Human Rights Icon and the United States was experiencing a Human Rights Crisis never before seen, the momentum around this event built.”

Together with Abraham J. Bonowitz, a longtime leader nationwide in the movement, Kincad Eve created a week long International Human Rights Conference. Some of the most powerful and amazing voices in this movement will be speaking including Amanda Knox, Dejaun Correia, Rodrick Reed, Shane Claiborne, Liliana Segura & and so many more.

Kincaid says, “We are finalizing our panels and still reaching out to speakers as this is all coming together super fast. But when the government continues to set execution dates at unprecedented rates never seen, yet alone during a lame duck transition, it requires a quick response. I said it back in July-Trump may be winning the battle-but he’s killing on my home turf and I’m going to win the war. I have literally been preparing for this moment since I was 13 years old…”

The panelists are being carefully selected to help shine a light on the most fundamental aspects of this policy, and also the humanity and impacts on all those involved in this process. If people are being killed in your name-you have a duty to care. These pieces will be just the tip of the iceberg-but will hopefully inspire you and guide you to dig deeper. The more you learn about this policy, the more you’ll come to realize execution is not the solution.”

Kincaid Eve also points out that this important international event is the first initiative of The Social Justice Workers, a non profit social justice PR firm “aimed at raising awareness at the most severe and systemic injustices that can’t be fixed in the courtroom.” It is meaningful that she founded the organization with recently executed federal prisoner ,Christopher Vialva, a week before his death at the hands of the federal government.
