Junko Geddes has lived a fascinating, determined, successful life. Born and raised in Japan, it was there that she completed her early schooling and worked her first job, showing the steadfastness, determination and brilliant mind that would stand her in good stead through personal and professional struggles across two continents.

One day, the thought occurred to her that it was important to her that her young grandson — and the generations that would come later — understand who she really was and how she came to be in America. She wanted to tell her own story.

And with the encouragement of a group of friends, a writing group where she would occasionally read chapters out loud as she wrote them, she began to write.

And she told her story…and it truly is a powerful and compelling one. Taking the reader through her early years, life and education and the early career of a young woman in Japan through to her marriage, immigration to Canada and finally to the US, to her years as a young mom, and ultimately to her divorce and the professional success that she found in her new countries.

And though the book’s title speaks poignantly about life ‘in the land of strangers' it is clear that the author, who came to these shores as a young woman unsure quite what to expect, has successfully navigated all that the world has thrown at her.

It is an inspirational read, recommended.
