Industry watchers have known for some time that Halal meat, once primarily marketed to Muslim consumers, have become more popular with people across all demographics. This has been made increasingly clear as many mainstream restaurants begin to serve halal (KFC’s recent announcement of their move to halal chicken only in their restaurants across Ontario is one high profile example.)

Statistics clearly show that more and more people are asking for halal so their decision is not only more inclusive of the increasing Muslim population in the province and across North America, but also indicative of what is becoming more popular among diners looking for healthier options. The Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America reports that people in the US spent 20 billion dollars on halal food in 2020 — and that number continues to rise.

According to Mordor’s Intelligence Report on the North American Halal Food and Beverages Market, “the halal label has transitioned from a religious identification mark to a guarantee of food safety, hygiene, and dependability, increasing its popularity among Muslim and non-Muslim consumers.” The report also points out that “companies looking to enhance their competitiveness, getting halal certification is becoming crucial to stay up with the market trends. It is proving a fantastic marketing tool for companies and meat processors.”

While they are not surprised at halal’s growing popularity, for the founders of Food Plus More, their Halal certification is much more than a marketing tool. It’s culture, tradition, family — and their strict adherence to halal practices is nothing new.

Their passion for Halal grew from their roots as a restaurant first opened by the Tawachi family a quarter of a century ago. The restaurant sold donairs, burgers, and other things — but it was their perfection of their father’s Donair recipe that changed everything. They began selling it to other restaurants — which was a huge success. Ultimately they left the restaurant business, expanding operations to open a meat processing plant distributing their popular Donair products.

Today Food Plus More is the preferred Halal beef provider — federally approved in both the United States and Canada, serving many restaurants as their trusted source for high-quality halal donair meat, meeting stringent USDA and CFIA regulations to ensure top-notch sanitation, safety, and traceability.

“Donair is one example of a halal meat that is particularly popular in many parts of North America, especially on the East Coast. This is particularly beneficial for establishments in areas with a large population or those catering to tourists interested in trying local cuisine.” , says general manager, Gus Tawachi.

Food Plus More’s site describes their signature product this way: “Donair is a beloved dish known for its unique and delicious flavor profile. This dish features spiced halal beef combined with tangy garlic sauce and fresh vegetables, creating a delightful blend of savory, sweet, and tangy flavors. The meat is seasoned with aromatic Mediterranean spices, offering a rich and enticing taste. When paired with the creamy garlic sauce and crisp vegetables, donair provides a satisfying and memorable culinary experience.”

Today the industry leading company operates from a state-of-the-art 27,000 sq. ft. facility in Welland, Ontario, just across the border at Niagara Falls. This modern space allows FoodsPlus to meet the growing demands of customers while maintaining the high standards that define the brand.

“Consuming halal beef offers several advantages: it adheres to Islamic dietary laws, ensuring humane treatment and slaughter of the animal. The strict guidelines for halal meat production mean the beef is free from certain additives and hormones, resulting in a cleaner and more natural product,” Tawachi explains. “Additionally, many believe that the specific method of halal slaughter leads to better meat quality, enhancing the overall flavor and texture of the donair.”

Every product meets the highest standards of purity, quality, and ethical integrity“We’re deeply committed to offering halal products, which ensures not only ethical treatment but also numerous health benefits. This dedication to purity, quality, and integrity is at the core of everything we do.”
