He Escaped From A Cult As A Young Boy — Today He Shares His Inspiring Story

When Canadian Richard Kiers was a young boy, his family joined THE MOVE, founded in the 1960s by Sam Fife. As he says on Amazon, at its peak the repressive cult claimed nearly 50,000 members worldwide.

In Swindled by Faith: A Time For Reconciliation, he shares his story.

Recently I had the opportunity to ask him questions for Medium.

MEDIUM : Has it made it emotionally easier or more difficult to process these
past experiences now that you looked back and wrote about them as an
adult?

RICHARD KIERS : Yes it has absolutely made life much easier being able to express all the inner turmoil and finally being able to talk about it

MEDIUM : What was your biggest motivation for sharing this story?

RICHARD KIERS : I see the sadness in people who have left cults, the struggles they face every day. I wanted to tell my story so others could see that
there is life after a cult, one can face the past and still have a wonderful, prosperous, and happy life.

MEDIUM : What do you think it is important that people take away from this?

RICHARD KIERS : It is important that people understand that PTSD is very common among former cult members. It is important to talk about the past, speak out and tell the truth. Understand that real life is nothing like the
culture we learned as kids in a cult, Learn to forgive, learn to understand.

MEDIUM : Can you give the readers some tips about what they might be able to do if they think a friend or family member is caught up in a cult?

RICHARD KIERS : Listen, pay attention,watch how the kids are treated, and speak out, don’t pussyfoot around facts. Most of all, don’t enable people who
join strange fringe groups by accepting that it is “just a phase” Its
all about the kids!

MEDIUM : Can you share with us what is next for you? What are you writing now?

RICHARD KIERS : I am currently writing a second, more comprehensive book on cults. This book is called “Silent Voices” I have interviewed over 100
former cult members from various different cults, compared stories and
experiences.
